Quetzalcoatl is the feathered snake god of the Aztec and Toltec civilizations. Traditionally the god of the morning and evening star, he is also identified as the god of wind and air, and the creator of writing and the calendar, as well as being the patron of priests and a symbol of death and rebirth. Sacrifice to Quetzalcoatl involved human sacrifice. Legend said that Quetzalcoatl would return in a new age, and when Montezuma, the final ruler of the Aztecs, saw the Spanish land in Mexico, he thought that the serpent god had returned.
