The Insect Pit, also known as the Insect Chasm, Abyss or the Obis, is located in in one of the many deep gorges dotting Skull Island. This area is home to numerous hostile invertebrate creatures, such as Arachno-Claws, Carnictises, DeplectorsWeta-rexesDecarnocimex and Abyscidis.

Creatures of the Chasm[]

The creatures of the Chasm are evolved giant invertebrates that overtime, thrived on the biomes of the pits where any unlucky fallen creature, living or dead, was destined to be the on dinner plate of of these horrifying insects. The creatures inhabit a wide range of areas such as in crevices, muck pits, holes in the chasm walls or in the ground.

Creatures common in the chasm include the giant evolved Weta-rex, an evolved species of the weta that storms its prey in large numbers, the Arachno-Claw, a spider-like evolved springtail, the Decarnocimex, a huge beetle-and-scorpion-like ensiferan, the Deplector, a giant crustacean that lives within the chasm walls, the Abyscidis, a smaller cavernous crustacean similar to the Deplector, and the Carnictis, perhaps the chasm's most infamous inhabitant; a large, carnivorous parasitic worm that dwells in the warm sludge that pools at the bottom of the pit. With a set of sharp teeth they grab, tear and suffocate their victims to death,

King Kong (2005 film)[]

The Insect Pit lays below the fallen log that serves as a bridge to Kong's lair. When the remaining members of the SS Venture attempt to cross the log in their search for Ann Darrow, the first mate Mr. Hayes warns the others to go back to the log. Hayes is grabbed by Kong, having his legs broken, and is thrown into the chasm wall, where he falls into the pit, dead.

After Jack Driscoll tells them to shoot, Kong shakes the log, sending several of the crewmen falling to their deaths, including Choy and two other crewmen. Shortly after, Kong shoves the log, sending it plummeting, along with the crewman, into the chasm below. Preston jumps at the right time to grab several long vines high above the pit, while the log keeps falling and is caught between the pit walls, sending the remaining crewman to land unconsciously at the bottom.

As they wake up, the remaining members look up and wake up the other survivors. After Jack fends off several of the inhabitants back into the caves by using a flare, he cradles a crying Jimmy in his arms, while Carl Denham is in dazed amazement before breaking down over the sight of his broken filming camera, Lumpy holding the dying hand of Choy in the muck pit, while the only surviving crewman looked up above to see how far they have fallen.

Several of the crewmembers lie dead where they landed, including Mr. Hayes laying near the back part of the chasm, the first Venture crewman laying a few feet near Mr. Hayes body, the second Venture crewman dead on the shore of the muck pool, Choy landing to his death in the muck pool, while the third Venture crewman lies dead on the other bank of the muck pool, dying by impact via landing on the hard surface of the muck pool as the log came to a stop.

As the flare goes out, the true horror of the pit appear, as Weta-rexes, Decarnocimex and Arachno-claws begin to skulk out of the shadows. The Carnictis rise from their muck pools, attempting to devour Choy's body, where a rage-filled Lumpy wards them off while the other several others looks over the body of the second Venture crewman. As Lumpy attempts to pull Choy's body out of the the muck, a Weta-rex attack him, leading to Jack removing the Weta-rex. This reults in the Weta-rex turning on Jack instead, as a now-alert Jimmy and the fourth Venture crewman behind Jimmy look on in horror, knowing what is to come. Lumpy, with his machete, chops and hacks at the Carnictis, but one manages to latch onto his leg, with Lumpy attempting to ward it off.

A crazed turned angry Carl looks up to see Jack and the others being attacked, before Denham screams in anger as he attacks a Decarnocimex with one of the Mausers using it as a long stick, before swatting several swarming Weta-rexes. As this is happening, the last surviving crewman attempt to climb up the chasm walls, before he is snatched by a Deplector hiding in the shadows of a large hole in the abyssal walls, screaming as his cap falls off his head falling into the chasm. Jimmy, watching, swats a Weta-rex from a vine.

An above view shows the extent of the danger: Essentially a large swarm of all of the pit inhabitants have come to feast, with their prey putting up a fight. As Carl, Jack and Jimmy swarms at the large bugs, Lumpy keeps on swinging his machete at the Carnictis, before one of them attempts to devour his arm. Lumpy tries to hit it, before an unsuspecting Carnictis rises up behind him and grabs his head. In grotesque detail, as Lumpy has his head fully engulfed into the Carnictis' mouth, he can only scream in terror, as he is devoured and swarmed by the Carnicitis, releasing his machete from his hand, and being dragged into the muck pool to be torn to pieces.

Jimmy grabs a Thompson M1928 with the last of the ammo, firing at several Weta-rexes swarming Jack, while Denham continues swinging at the swarming bugs around him. As this is happening, the third Venture crewman's body is tossed around by several Arachno-claws hogging his body, before they launch it and his body is caught by a roaming Deplector. As Jimmy's submachine gun runs out, the last survivors huddle together.. At this point, it seemed to them they have lost, just Jack, Carl and Jimmy were succumbing to their ends, as all of the inhabitants, the Arachno-claws, Weta-rexes, Deplectors and Decarnocimex swarmed them to the back of the cavern, but before all hope seemed lost, the bugs were all being killed by an unknown force.

It turns out it was Captain Englehorn, and several of the crewmen shooting at the bugs, before a courageous Bruce Baxter swinging from a rope shooting at the bugs, mimicking his action movies. As the falling bugs pile up, Baxter shoots at the remaining Arachno-claws, before a rope is deployed to the bottom. As Jimmy is about to climb, he notices Hayes' body. He grabs Hayes's peaked cap, possibly accepting his demise, before Jack tells him to climb, leaving Jimmy to put the hat on and climb the rope, with Jack following behind.

As Bruce patrols the remaining area, Carl appears to have gone mad, telling Bruce about the last thing you see as you drown, and the movie being in full colour, possibly going crazy at the loss of all of the valuable footage he had recorded on his now destroyed camera. Bruce forces Carl to climb up the rope, as Bruce follows suit.
